Kristen Paige

ABOUT

Kristen Paige is a lighting designer, day dreamer, abstract painter, and contemporary performance maker living and working in NYC. She’s been making up stories for as long as she can remember, hungry to escape into a fantasy of the everyday world. Her work hopes to create authentic environments that explore the relationship of light, texture, transportation, and moving bodies.
Kristen graduated from Muhlenberg College with a B.A. in Theater; a liberal arts program that allowed her to learn a little bit about a lot of things. She is a previous Resident Lighting Designer for the Second Avenue Dance Company and has designed dance pieces at the West End Theatre and New York Live Arts.
The best kinds of stories envelop you in a world of their own.

Nya, an inner city public school teacher, is trying desperately to save her son, Omari. As her job permeates her consciousness her world is derived of the public school she teaches in. Fluorescent lights beat down on glossy floors that reflect the light back up, the physical space reflecting the pressure she feels inside.

Backstage of the fictional Carlotta Vance Theater, the women’s dressing room becomes a hub of activity as the preparations for the musical commence. Glowing bulbs above the makeup stations and pan pendants help to fill the space with a personal and almost domestic atmosphere as the actors and actresses spend much of their lives back here.

In contrast, the adjoining hallway has cooler sconces across the wall, a less personalized and more industrial, pragmatic space.

Part of Project #892, a performance where one story was told in two rooms simultaneously.

Somewhere so we won’t forget

An exploration of materials and relationships- the object to object, person to object, person to person. Entangled in rope and plastic, the performers act in their own spaces isolated in amber light until they discover each other. Now caught in bright white floodlights, they attempt to meet each other and eventually dissolve back to the looming fan structure and warm dimming light.

Airline Highway

In the parking lot of the Hummingbird Hotel on the outskirts of New Orleans, dawn slowly wakes up on the little community that resides there, quickly preparing for the matriarch’s, Miss Ruby’s, living funeral. As the day passes the sun pushes the shadows in new directions, and the heat of the afternoon sun is embellished with string lights and party decorations.

Second Avenue Dance Company

A selection of pieces from my time as Resident Lighting Designer of the Second Avenue Dance Company. I love working with student choreographers to realize the environment and mood of the piece on stage, and to help teach a common language of lighting design. I also had the opportunity to collaborate with established choreographers to create new work or remount previous productions.
